CANCER DRUG ORAL VERSION COMMENCES TRIAL
NOVOGEN COMMENCES CLINICAL TRIAL OF ORAL VERSION OF CANCER DRUG

Australian pharmaceutical company, Novogen Limited, has received approval to commence a clinical trial of the oral formulation of its anti-cancer drug, phenoxodiol.

The trial is to be conducted by Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne, and will involve men with advanced prostate cancers that have become unresponsive to other therapies.

Phenoxodiol currently is the subject of three clinical trials in cancer patients in Australia and the USA, using an intravenous formulation.

The phenoxodiol program director, Dr Graham Kelly, said the trial was further helpful progress in the development of an effective anti-cancer drug.

“Being able to deliver the same blood levels of phenoxodiol by an oral preparation offers a more convenient dosage form for patients and will make long-term dosage of patients a more practical proposition,” Dr Kelly said.

Phenoxodiol is an Australian-developed anti-cancer drug that belongs to a new generation of drugs known as signal transduction inhibitors.

These drugs work by reversing the signalling processes that are malfunctioning in cancer cells and contributing to the cancer process. In this way, cancer cells can be targeted with little or no effect on normal cells.

Phenoxodiol is distinctive in being able to target a wide range of abnormal signal transduction processes, suggesting broad action against many different types of human cancer.

Phenoxodiol is being developed as a first-line therapy for prostatic carcinoma, but its potential is also being assessed as a treatment for other cancers including kidney, pancreas, lung and bowel carcinoma, and melanoma.

Statements herein that are not descriptions of historical facts are forward-looking and subject to risk and uncertainties. Actual results could differ materially from those currently anticipated due to a number of factors, including those set forth in the Company’s Securities and Exchange Commission filings under “Risk Factors”, including risks relating to the early stage of products under development; uncertainties relating to clinical trials; dependence on third parties; future capital needs; and risks relating to the commercialisation, if any, of the Company’s proposed products (such as marketing, safety, regulatory, patent, product liability, supply, competition and other risks).
