Cancer development

The DNA (genetic apparatus) in cells is prone to damage (mutation) by carcinogens (eg. chemicals, viruses etc.) that can produce fatal errors in the cell.

To deal with this eventuality, the cell has a number of quality control checks designed to detect abnormal gene function. These are in the form of proteins such as p53, pRB, and CHK.

When these checkpoints detect an abnormal gene function, they initiate repair mechanisms. If the gene cannot be repaired, then those same checkpoints will trigger a self-destruct mechanism that leads to death of the cell.
